IVF AND EMBRYOS TRANSFER

IVF (In Vitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer), best known as in vitro fertilization, is among the most used assisted fertilization techniques, thanks to its effectiveness. FIVET was developed by Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards in the UK, the latter recognized Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2010.

The technique is indicated in the case of tubal occlusion, seminal pathology, failure of the simplest techniques. According to the IOLIFE experience, prevalent with Greek and Italian patients, FIVET success rates are 54% per cycle. Much depends, however, on the causes of infertility, the age of the patient, the partner’s seminal fluid values.

IN DETAIL

1 STIMULATION TO GET OOCYTES

By subcutaneous injections, follicles containing the oocytes are induced. The ovarian response of the patient is monitored by ultrasound and blood sampling to evaluate the number and quality of the follicles.

2 PICK UP (PICK UP)

The eggs are harvested through a small, sedated, painless operation. In a few hours, the patient overcomes the postoperative phase.

3 INSEMINATION IN VITRO

Retrieved oocytes are cultured with the seed of the partner, decongeled and prepared to obtain fertilization. After about 20 hours the zygote development (pre-embryonic phase) is confirmed. Zygotes destined to be transferred to the uterus are left in culture for another 24-48 hours, becoming real embryos. The average fertilization rate is about 70%.

4 EMBRIONAL TRANSFER

Embryos are transferred to the uterine cavity using a thin catheter. The operation is fast, painless and the stay lasts a few minutes. IOLIFE recommends the transfer of two embryos to reduce the risk of multiple pregnancies and to avoid excessive efforts in the next 3-4 days

PROCEDURES

First visit to the IOLIFE clinic in Athens in Greece

The first step is to undergo all the tests you and your partner require before treatment (see below). You can do it in Italy or here in the IOLIFE clinic.

During our first visit, our experienced physician will determine a protocol of individual stimulation. The nurse will explain you how to use the drugs and sign the statement regarding the treatment. Semen can be harvested and frozen so it is not necessary for your partner to return to Athens again.

The price of the first interview is 150 euros in Athens or you can make your first visit to Rome o Milan.

After the confirmation of the treatment you pay the deposit where it is included: the therapeutic plan, the first personal consultation, the doctor’s assistance, all the communication with the coordinator, in case of stimulation in Athens all the clinical monitoring, administration)

Second Visit at IOLIFE Clinic in Athens in Greece

The stimulation of the ovaries begins on the 2nd day of the menstrual cycle and lasts about 12 days. During this time you will need to do ultrasound (on the 5th and 8th day) in order to determine if the drug dosage is for you.

Around the 12th day of the stimulation will be the taking of oocytes in general anesthesia. On the same day a sperm sample will be collected for fertilization (if you have not frozen the liquid during your first visit or if you are using donor seeds).

Cultures of embryos last for 3-5 days and you can talk to the embryologist every day to know how many embryos there are and what’s going on with the swollen.

Around 15 to 17 days from the beginning of stimulation, the embryo will be transferred.

We currently transfer 1-2 embryos. The amount of embryos to be transferred will be discussed and decided with the patient, medical and embryologist. Unused and healthy embryos can be frozen and used later if the first attempt is not successful.

20 days after the embryo transfer will take the pregnancy test. If the pregnancy test is positive, please continue to take prescribed medications until the 12th week of pregnancy. If the pregnancy test is negative, it should immediately stop taking prescribed medications.

This chart describes the steps and the time periods for IVF treatment.

We recommend that you submit to all the recommended tests in your country. We can provide you with all the analyzes here also in Greece and it takes a couple of days to complete them.

A deposit must be paid in advance by bank transfer / cash when confirming the treatment.

The remaining amount must be paid before the embryo transfer date or the date of the transfer (cash, credit cards or bank transfer are accepted on our account).
